At Ballet Theatre Company (BTC), we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the positive impact of the arts. Through our Community Enrichment Program (CEP), we strive to reach as many people as possible to make dance classes, and opportunities to attend professional-caliber live performance accessible.

The mission of the Sensory-Friendly performances is to provide a judgment-free and relaxed environment for those who have a disability, sensory sensitivity or any other challenges that may make them feel uncomfortable at a “typical” performance.

Usually, performances on stage are inherently sensory-rich due to its landscape of scenery, lighting, music, special effects, and more! Minor adjustments to a performance can alleviate many of the expected stressors for those with sensory dysfunction or sensory processing disorder would feel and create an atmosphere that is more enjoyable for all. Music and on stage sounds will be lowered, low level lighting will be maintained for the audience and other adjustments needed to ensure everyone's comfort will be made.

Most importantly, the other patrons and staff are more likely to be understanding if a patron who has sensory challenges exhibits a reaction to the performance.

How The Sensory-Friendly Ballet Started

Through BTC’s work in its adaptive dance program in partnership with The Miracle League of CT, BTC identified a gap in our community that could no longer be ignored. BTC learned that many of these families participating in the adaptive dance program had never been to a ballet or theater production. Some families expressed concerns about audience behavior expectations or disturbing other patrons, while others noted that the production’s loud music and bright or flashing stage lights would be overwhelming to their family member with a disability.

Identifying this visible inequality in our community pushed BTC to determine ways to better serve this audience to be more inclusive, and as a result enrich our community. As a result, The Sensory-Friendly Ballet was established. The Sensory-Friendly Ballet aims to create an accessible and inclusive environment so those with disabilities can enjoy the positive impact of the arts without worry or concern.

BTC’s specific goal for the SFB is to continue to offer two inclusive, full-length professional ballets each season and to provide those interested in attending, financial support.

BTC is proud to collaborate with its long-time partner, The Miracle League of Connecticut, to provide the best experience for all attendees through The Sensory-Friendly Ballet.
